About Me, About Us
Hello, to those of you who don’t know me, my name is Makenna, and I’ll be facilitating the symbiotic networks for us. This is my first business, and it is so special to get to build it in true reflection of nature, through the nourishment of reciprocal relating. I’ve spent years with my hands and eyes in the soil studying the foliage and the animals of this world as an ecologist. I got my degree in biology, and from there it’s taken me to some strange and mysterious places. I’ve been to the very North of my home country, to far-away Alaska and Maine, and I’ve come back to my origins on the Colorado foothills and plains.
I’ve naturalized myself as a scientific researcher. I’ve surveyed many lands to analyze their biodiversity and reproduction cycles, and therefore their structural and functional health. What’s become apparent to me in my many years as an experimental and observational researcher is that our ecosystems are most resilient to change and most available for productive growth when bustling with relationship. That’s what led me here: the inexplicable desire to be in deep relationship to a community of beings that I serve and serve me back, not out of obligation, but out of necessity for a thriving life. Alive with exchange.
In the field, as a scientist, it’s a powerful tool to track change over time. I’ve watched the pine trees grow cones at different elevations, the Arctic tundra grow tall in its 2-3 mere months of summer, and observed how the plants regrow on the soil-restored mountainous hillsides of the Upper East Coast. I’ve found that it’s very inspiring to quantify progressive growth. It kind of reminds me of when I was in University. I loved being in school. There’s something so satisfying about being held accountable to learn and challenge myself to try new things, then be rewarded for them. I designed Symbiosis to mirror some of these influential lived experiences, with clear systems of tracking, real accountability to show up for growth, and a refusal to fake progress that isn't there.
Many people call me a poet, but not for the reason that you think. I don't really write poetry, but I use it in my speech. The language that I’ve developed and the language that I communicate through is full of metaphors and vocabulary. I believe that symbolism is a way to develop a relationship with the great mystery that connects us, and I plan to use this for meaning-making in the community to inspire us. Nature is humanity, and humanity is nature. There are so many ways to spin this, and I’m excited to let loose and compare the natural laws to us, humans, often.
I find cyclicality to be deeply rooted in nature’s fullest truth, and therefore ingrained within the context of these offerings that I will facilitate. Meeting goals is participating in a cyclical relationship to self, and attending group sessions is tending to a cyclical relationship with the collective. Each large community gathering is an opportunity to reflect on the life that a goal has given you and the death that comes with its completion, working as an opportunity for new inspirations to be sown as seeds and grow new life.
